How do you prune an Apple tree?
Henri's tips in a row:
- In February (the winter season) is the time to prune an apple tree.
- Do not prune too late in the season, as you may damage the flower buds.
- Did you heavily prune back the apple tree last year? Then the tree will react to this by means of the so-called water-lot. These are thin shoots growing upwards. Cut away some of these thin shoots. If you leave too many, the tree crown will become too dense and the tree will eventually produce less fruit.
- Do not cut away the short shoots, or flower wood, completely. These small branches with flower buds will eventually allow new fruit to grow.
