Garden calendar July

Planning, design and construction

  • Now many plants are in bloom and you can see exactly how they grow and what colors they have. See a cool plant somewhere and want it in your garden? Make a list of the plants you like or put them in our Plant Encyclopedia. When you make new plans for your garden, you'll already have your wish list ready.
  • Dreaming of an outdoor kitchen? With our online drawing tool you'll have the design ready in no time! In the meantime, you can experiment: place a camping gas stove on a stable table and make it a party!

The Agapanthus, or African Lily, is a standout in the garden.

Planting

The Zucchini plant is now taking up a lot of space.

Maintenance

  • Is it hot and dry? Like the lawn, the border plantings need to be watered regularly.
  • Roses are vulnerable to an aphid colony. How to make your roses aphid-free in a natural way, read in this blog.

The Hydrangea is beautiful in July; give this plant plenty of water.

Care

  • When you go on vacation, ask someone to do the much-needed chores, such as mowing the lawn and watering the plants.
  • Give roses special rose fertilizer and remove affected leaves immediately.
  • Fertilize the border. Plants consume a lot of nutrients now. Fertilizing will make for nicer crops and more blooms. Soil conditioner such as compost or mulch are extremely effective in improving the soil in your garden, helping your plants grow better.
  • Put plant supports on plants with tall flowers to prevent them from snapping.

Make sure bloomers in containers and pots get plenty of water.

Pruning

  • If you have a Grape in the garden, pay attention to it now. Cut it back to the fourth leaf. Always use clean and sharp pruning tools.
  • Now cut the Geranium in your border back.
  • With other plants, always cut away the spent flowers.
  • With roses, cut away not only the flower, but also the branch to just above an outward-facing eye.
  • Now is the time to pick cut flowers from your garden. Put them in a vase or try drying them to make a still life.

The Poppy continues to bloom until the end of July.

The lawn

  • It is good to fertilize once a month. Pick a time just before a rain.
  • Don't throw away the cut grass. It's good for the compost pile.
  • Is it dry for a long time? Then throw a bucket of water over your compost pile. This is because in order to compost, the material needs moisture.

Weeding

  • Remove emerging weeds in the border, paths and patio immediately. This will prevent it from spreading.
  • When weeding, be careful not to damage the roots of plants.

Pond or water dish

  • Care for birds in the garden. Place a large bowl of water and refill it regularly so they can drink and bathe.
  • Keep a close eye on the pond's water level and refill as needed.
  • Clean the pump regularly and remove excess algae.
  • If water lilies grow a little too enthusiastically, you should thin them out.
  • Cut away spent flowers and remove browned leaves.
  • Place a large, flat stone on the sun side of the pond. Frogs and butterflies love to come and sit on the warm stone at the water's edge!

Pond plants are growing nicely now.

Kitchen Garden

  • Want to keep birds from snacking on your fruit trees and berry bushes? Don't stretch a net, but hang strips of aluminum foil or make a tent out of netting. This is more animal-friendly.
  • At the beginning of the month, you can still sow various herbs, such as parsley, dill and chives.
  • Of course, you can still sow lettuce and radishes. You can also sow pak choi, carrot and spinach, among others, now.
  • If possible, sow in a spot in the shade and keep the soil well moist.
  • This month is harvest month for many fruits, so that will be feasting on berries, strawberries and raspberries.
  • Are your sage plants growing vigorously? Pick the leaves now to dry them.

For the animals

  • Set up a bird drinker where animals can drink and the birds can take a bath. Refill the bathtub regularly.
  • No insect hotel in your garden yet? Place one immediately, preferably with the opening facing south and well sheltered. If possible, put or hang the insect hotel at least one meter above the ground.
  • A diverse and climate-friendly garden is a garden where there is room for life: for birds, butterflies and insects. So choose plants and flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Tip number 1 for more butterflies in your garden: put a Butterfly bush in your garden! This beautiful plant blooms from July to the end of September. Even in October it can still bloom. So you can enjoy the flowers all summer long. And the butterflies that descend upon them, of course.
