June garden calendar

Planning, design and construction

  • When it is hot, a cooling pool is wonderful. A swimming pond is wonderful in the summer and looks natural all year round. Are you working on a garden design where there is room for a swimming pond? Then carefully consider the position of the sun in relation to the garden. At what time of day where in the garden the sun is, you can use our online drawing program with the Sun and Shadow Simulation.
  • Do you have plans to dig in the garden, for example to build a swimming pond or pool? Check in your online garden design where the electrical cables of the garden lighting are located.
  • Garden benches and other wooden garden furniture can be stained on a dry day.
  • The best shade comes from a tree. Don't have natural shade on your patio? Then install a shade cloth or other awning now to protect you from too much sunlight.
  • Garden benches and other wooden garden furniture can be stained on a dry day.
  • A balmy summer evening is a great opportunity to spend some time in the garden. Lighting increases the atmosphere! Therefore, when laying out or renovating your garden, don't forget to make preparations for lighting.

Planting

  • The dahlias and other summer bulbs may be planted in pots. You can fill the border with these later.
  • In June and July, you can place biennials for the following year's blooms.
  • It is still possible to sow some summer annuals.
  • Want to buy new plants? Preferably don't pick a day that is too hot. Dip the new greenery heavily in a bucket of water before you plant them.
  • While planting annuals, it is wise to immediately mix fertilizer in the form of pellets, cones or tablets through the soil.

Maintenance

  • When the weather is hot and dry for long periods in a row, your plants need extra water. Don't have a rain barrel yet? Then it's about time. Disconnect your downspout and place a rain barrel under it.
  • Preferably spray at the end of the day. It's better to spray for a few hours once a week than 15 minutes every day!
  • Provide support for tall, perennial plants.
  • Climbing plants also need a rack or other support.

Care

  • Check daily that potted plants have enough water.
  • Give plants you have just transplanted or transplanted extra water.
  • Heavy rain? Check that water can still drain properly from your pots and window boxes.
  • To prevent dehydration, cover the soil around tree saplings with a mulch layer or tree bark.
  • Add compost accelerator to your compost pile.
  • Is it dry for a long time? Then throw a bucket of water over your compost pile. This is because in order to compost, the material needs moisture.
  • Check the roses for aphids or other diseases and always remove spent flowers.
  • Now fertilize the rose bushes with extra manure.
  • Remove spent flowers, you'll get new ones in return!
  • The lawn mower is now in heavy use: clean it carefully after use.

Pruning

  • Most hedges can be trimmed. Preferably do so on a cloudy day.
  • Shrubs that have died out may also be pruned.

Lawn

  • Mow the grass once or twice a week. Preferably do so in the evening.
  • Trim the edges of the lawn so the grass does not creep over the tiles or into the borders.
  • Did you go on vacation and have piles of grass after mowing? Spread it out well if you want to put it in the compost pile. This will prevent it from rotting.

Weeding

  • Remove emerging weeds immediately. This will prevent it from spreading.
  • When weeding, be careful not to damage the roots of plants.
  • Pull weeds from the joints of your paths or patio.

Pond or water dish

  • If your pond is several years old, see if the aquatic plants are not crowding each other out. If they are, thin out some.
  • If you have a lot of algae in the pond, take some out. You can do this with a rake.
  • Immediately clean the filter in the pond and the pump.
  • Refill the pond and water dish on warm days.

Kitchen Garden

  • This month there is lots to do in the vegetable garden! Many vegetables you can sow outside this month. From potatoes to eggplants, zucchini to broccoli and cucumber to red cabbage.
  • Fortunately, there is plenty to harvest this month as well. If you started early in the season, you can already enjoy carrots, snow peas, lettuce and spring onions, among other things. Now is also the time of strawberries, raspberries and cherries!

For the animals

  • Want to trim a hedge? Then check first that it doesn't have a bird's nest in it.
  • For this reason, don't prune all the shrubs in your garden on the same day either. Birds like to shelter in hedges.
  • Do you have some larger branches left over after pruning? Don't throw them away, but pile them up in a corner of the garden. Insects, hedgehogs and birds welcome this natural shelter.
  • Set up a bird drinker where animals can drink and the birds can take a bath. Refill the bathtub regularly.
  • No insect hotel in your garden yet? Place one immediately, preferably with the opening facing south and well sheltered. If possible, put or hang the insect hotel at least one meter above the ground.
