The Peasant Jasmine
Winter is the best time to thin out a peasant jasmine so that it will bloom beautifully again in May-June.
How do you prune a Farmers' Jasmine?
Henri's tips in a row:
- Want to curb the growth of the peasant jasmine? Don't simply cut off the top, but prune with policy.
- Philadelphus 'Virginal' flowers on the perennial wood. By simply cutting off branches, you are actually removing flowering wood.
- Pick some older, thick branches that you cut off from the bottom. This will give the shrub more air.
- There are two types of branches: perennial branches and the young light gray branches. These young branches were formed during the last growing season. Try to preserve these young branches so that they will bloom beautifully in the coming years.
- Thin out the shrub by eye: that is, you don't cut something off the height, but take out whole branches from the ground up.
- Prune away about a third of it.
- Use sharp secateurs or pruning saws for thinning.
- The young branches now have a chance to continue growing.
