Henri's tips on conditioning the Glossy Medlar hedge
- Want to create a hedge of Glossy Medlar? Then the key is to turn the open structure of the individual plants into the basis for a dense hedge.
- By pruning the plants in early spring, they will soon have fuller leaves and the hedge will become denser.
- Prune away all dead and protruding branches. This will make the plants more compact and allow them to grow again better.
- If you prune down to the young shoots, the Glossy Sycamore will then grow out fuller.
- Pruning also makes the plant stronger and healthier again. This can be recognized by fresh green and red leaves without dark spots.
- Is the hedge already in nice shape? Then you can choose to prune it either by hand or with hedge shears.
Tip
Not a fan of the Glossy Medlar or want more variety in the garden? Also consider the bay laurel. This shrub is also perfect for use as a leaf hedge. Like the Glossy Spurge, the Laurel remains evergreen and you can choose from several varieties.
