Checklist: when to use or not to use slate work?

Henri's tips on slate trees and slate work

  • Slating is only wise if the type of tree is suitable for it.
  • If the tree species is not suitable for it, the slate work may dominate and actually attract attention which is not the intention.
  • In fact, if this is the case, the trees will appear much more beautiful once the slate work is removed.
  • Removing the slate work and pruning the trees individually into shape creates more peace and openness.
  • There is another added benefit: By removing the slate work, there is less shadow on the ground. The plantings under the trees get more light as a result.
  • Of course, there are also situations where an espalier is a good choice. By vertical slate work in, for example, lime trees and hornbeams, you can achieve a beautiful separation and eliminate a disturbing view.
  • With horizontal slate work such as with the Dakplataan or Mulberry, you get a natural parasol.
