Ornamental grasses pruning is how you do it!

Henri's tips on pruning a Pennisetum (Lampshade Grass)

  • Lampshade grass grows thirty to one hundred inches tall, depending on the variety. Prune back this type of ornamental grass in early spring.
  • Prune it all the way back to the ground and root well over the remaining stumps to remove all the dead bits of stem.
  • You can also go over the plant with a leaf rake to remove the loose bits.
  • This way, the plant gets more light and space, allowing it to develop better again in the spring.
  • After pruning, see that there is a bare spot in the base of the ornamental grass? Scoop out the plant and tear or prune it in half. Put back the most vital part. This way you rejuvenate the plant.
  • Grasses have a tendency to grow upward. After a few years, dig them out, tear them and plant the best part back into the ground properly.
