Picking apples and immediately baking an apple pie: delicious with fall weather!
Planting
- Fill vacant spots in the border with the plants from your pots or new purchases. The plant will take root quickly because the soil is still warm.
- Spring bloomers such as the Tulip, Crocus, Blue Grape and Daffodil put in the garden as bulbs now.
- In the coming months, you can plant Roses.
- Fill pots or baskets with bright autumn blooms, such as Asters, Winter Violets and purple- or white-flowering Winter Heather. Mountain tea, with its red berries, is also a nice eye-catcher on the garden table.

Maintenance
- Go through your garden systematically and remove fallen leaves, spent flowers and dead plant material. Leaves in borders can also feel free to leave some of them behind. Beautiful seed pods of perennials such as Phlomis and Stachys Hummelo are also worth leaving for a while.
- Throw all your trash on the compost pile except root weeds, which will actually multiply!
- Also make a pile of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden where animals can scavenge.
- Is it cold for the time of year? Get frost-prone plants inside in time.
- Remove plant supports from the border, clean and store them.
- Disconnect, clean and store the overhead watering system.
- Do you have a tree tie around a trunk? Check that it is not too tight by now.
- Check that your paving has not subsided anywhere. If it has, you can take action on it before the frost period.
- Clear out your gazebo or shed and make room to accommodate garden furniture later.
- Check your garden tools: clean them, repair where necessary and lubricate them with some oil.
Autumn leaves, because of their beautiful hues, are beautiful
Care
- Put new plants in the border or moved plants? Apply some compost after planting.
- Roses, shrubs and hedges can now be pampered with compost. This is sure to have an effect in the coming year with good growth and rich blooms.
- Want to store bulbs? Do so in a dry place where it is not too hot.

Pruning
- Do you have overgrown stem roses growing? Cut them in half to prevent them from breaking during an autumn storm.
- With a beech hedge, any outliers can be trimmed back into line nicely. Preferably do this on a cloudy day.
- Prune the Cherry, Plum or Peach now. This will prevent lead disease from getting into the plants.

The lawn
- The ground is still warm from the summer, you can still mow just fine now.
- Do rake away the cut grass and any fallen leaves immediately to prevent thatch and mold growth.
- October is great for scarifying the grass if it proves necessary. The grass will recover quickly.
- End of the month? Take the lawn mower away for maintenance.
- Touch up the lawn edges again so the grass doesn't start growing over your border and patio.
Starting in late September, you can harvest pumpkins
Weeding
- Remove emerging weeds in the border, paths and patio immediately. This will prevent it from spreading.
- When weeding, be careful not to damage the roots of plants.
Pond or water dish
- Care for birds in the garden. Place a large bowl of water and refill it regularly so they can drink and bathe.
- Keep a close eye on the pond's water level and refill as needed.
- Span a fine-mesh net over the pond. This will prevent the leaves from falling into the water.
- The fish become less active; if the water temperature drops below eight degrees, stop supplemental feeding.
- Remove dead parts of aquatic plants from the pond.
Kitchen Garden
- Do you dream of apples from your own garden? During this month, you can start planting these fruit trees.
- If you already have an apple tree, pick regularly and pick up fallen apples immediately.
- Now is the time to plant garlic, then you will benefit from it next June in the form of garlic bulbs!
- Winter spinach is fine to sow now.
- There is also plenty to harvest, including potatoes, beets, broccoli, zucchini and pumpkins, of course.
- Still tomatoes on your plant but it's colder than ten degrees? Pick them now and let them continue ripening indoors.
- Kiwis you can plant now.
For the animals
- Set up a bird drinker where animals can drink and the birds can take a bath. Refill the bathtub regularly.
- A pile of leaves is a perfect hiding and scratching spot for many animals. So don't clear away all the fallen leaves.
- No insect hotel in your garden yet? Place one immediately, preferably with the opening facing south and well sheltered. If possible, put or hang the insect hotel at least one meter above the ground.
- If you want to clean up the pond, do so in the first half of October; after that, the aquatic animals need their rest and you don't want to disturb them.
- If you have a lot of trimmings, turn some branches into a scavenging area for the animals.
