Water-tolerant plants

Suggestions for plantings that tolerate water well.

Zen green (Ajuga reptans; Ajuga geneviensis)

Strong ground cover that likes moisture and can withstand drought. Low plant, so especially useful when water levels are not too high.

Fatwort (Sedum, various species)

Extremely hardy plant also used in green roofs. Will especially thrive on substrates where water drains quickly and can become bone dry without rain.

Swamp spurge (Euphorbia palustris)

One of many beautiful riparian plants. Make sure the soil does not become too dry. The plant can be grown in heavier soils, such as near a pond that rises and falls. Swamp spurge also does well in places where you can use an emptying catch basin to keep the border wet longer.

Grasses ('lawn grass'; Carex morrowii; muskigumensis)

A maintained lawn can be fine for a day of flooding. So can shaggier grass, but it can look unkempt after a "flood. Grasses and sedges can also be used in a border. Various species can handle wetness and dryness and are also very attractive, even in winter!

Willow (Salix; various species)

Shrubs have the advantage of always rising above the water. Most willows tolerate wet "feet" as well as drought, a great combination for a water garden! In your garden, you can use the less hardy growers like Salix repens.

Finder bush (Budleia)

Like Sedum, Budleia can handle both water and great dryness. Do you have a rainwater catchment with lots of sand and gravel? And thus a relatively fast drainage? Then you can try this shrub and, for example, plants like the Yucca.
