Growing your own herbs: basil

But basil is also widely used in other parts of the world, in south Asian cuisine, for example.

Moreover, basil has also been used as a medicine for centuries. Today we know that the herb, in addition to a large number of essential nutrients, also contains antioxidants, antiviral and antibacterial substances. So it is not surprising that it was (and is!) used as a medicinal application for various diseases. So basil is not only very tasty, but also super healthy! Moreover, it is not at all difficult to grow yourself.

Growing basil

Basil is an annual plant that loves light and warmth. It grows about 45 centimeters tall and there are as many as 150 varieties. We all know the common green variety, but there are also colored varieties and varieties that are more for ornamental than for consumption. It is best to sow basil indoors, in early spring, then plant out in pots or open ground when the weather is good.

The seeds are small, shiny black kernels that germinate after only a few days. The plants depend on pollinating insects for fertilization. So if you want to harvest seeds yourself, you will have to put them outside during the flowering period.

Care and harvesting

If the weather is really nice enough, you can put the plants outside in late spring. But let them harden off first by putting them in a cool place, such as a pantry or hallway, for a few days. Otherwise, the temperature difference will be too great. Choose a sunny spot in the garden or on the balcony. If the plant is too dark, the stems (gasping for light) will grow much longer and bear fewer leaves. Water regularly, but avoid getting too much wetness on the leaves or they will rot. Therefore, pour the water directly onto the soil.

When basil starts to flower, fewer leaves are formed. You can cut out the flowers to keep a nice, full plant. But, of course, if you also want to harvest your own seed, you should leave them in. You can cut or pick leaves to use throughout the year. This promotes leaf formation. By the way, the flowers are also just edible.
